Netanyahu: Toppling Iran’s Regime Not Israel’s Aim, But May Be Result

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in an interview on June 21 that while Israel's military actions are designed to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities, regime change in Tehran is not an official objective. However, he acknowledged that continued military pressure could indirectly destabilize Iran’s ruling system. This marks Netanyahu’s clearest comment yet amid speculation that Israel’s recent strikes are strategically targeting both military and symbolic institutions of the Iranian state.

Speaking to a domestic broadcaster, Netanyahu affirmed that Israel has the “capability to destroy Iran’s nuclear infrastructure,” even without direct U.S. involvement. He emphasized that Israel’s operations are focused on security—not political engineering—but left open the possibility that internal unrest in Iran could rise as a consequence of sustained pressure.

His remarks follow several days of intensified Israeli operations, including targeted drone strikes on IRGC leadership, cyberattacks on state television, and reported sabotage of infrastructure tied to the Supreme Leader's office. Iranian sources claim the attacks have disrupted internal communications and prompted emergency security measures around key regime figures.

International reaction to Netanyahu’s comments has been mixed. The United States reiterated that it does not support regime change in Iran, while Russia and China warned that any actions perceived as aiming for political collapse could provoke a broader conflict. The European Union expressed concern that targeting regime structures could make diplomacy nearly impossible.

Analysts note that Netanyahu’s rhetoric may be aimed at signaling deterrence rather than overt regime interference. Yet, with internal Iranian dissent already growing due to economic hardship and war pressures, external military action could inadvertently act as a catalyst for political destabilization.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials denounced Netanyahu’s comments as “imperialist interference,” vowing to retaliate “through all regional fronts.” Proxy groups in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have been placed on heightened alert, raising fears of a multi-front escalation.

Netanyahu’s statement underscores the complexity of Israel’s war strategy—where eliminating a nuclear threat intersects with the potential collapse of an adversarial regime, whether intended or not.
